German at Bedale High School

Apart from the fact that languages are fun, active, challenging and valuable for your future, there are good reasons for studying them:

  • Not everyone speaks English. We live in a world of many different languages. 94% of the world does not have English as their first language. 75% of the world does not speak English at all.
  • A little language can make a lot of difference. Jobs from receptionist to top-level management need language skills. There is room for all levels of ability in all types of work. Students in other European countries study languages until they are 18 and they are able to get jobs because they have language skills. More than 54% of employers in a recent survey said they were more likely to hire a person who speaks more than one language. They also pay these people more money.
  • Languages improve your understanding of how other people live and the quality of your life. A great way of getting to know and understand other people is by learning their language. It can also help you understand your own language better.
  • Bedale High School Modern Foreign Languages department is up to date, lively and very successful and we provide an excellent and varied curriculum in French and German.

At KS3 all students study either French or German in Year 7 and Year 8. The curriculum is supported by excellent materials including course books, workbooks and ICT packages. All 4 skills are given equal priority – Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing. The skills and strengths of the members of the languages team help us deliver the curriculum in a lively and interesting way.

Assessment

KS3

At the end of each unit of work all students at Key Stage 3 will be assessed in a variety of modular tests, ranging from listening and reading comprehensions, to speaking and writing tests.

How will I know how I am doing?

In MFL you will be set individual targets that will help you to develop your skills and understanding. You will receive regular feedback about your work when you complete homework, during class based work sessions and in your regular review points.

We would expect you to work towards a grade 3 or above in year 7 and grade 4 or above in year 8. Some people will no doubt excel in this subject and achieve levels that are beyond the expected for the year group. Remember this course is designed so that you have a variety of opportunities to achieve.

Just because you find one thing difficult doesn’t mean there won’t be another that you excel in. Try everything out and give it your best shot and you will see your learning improve.

KS4

Listening (25%) and Reading (25%) Speaking (25%) and Writing (25%) – end of year 11

How do we practise these skills?

  • lesson time
  • interactive online textbooks
  • past papers
  • language apps
  • native speakers
  • pen friends
  • magazines
  • music
  • film and TV
  • webpages

Extension Work and Homework

All students will receive a variety of worksheets, internet based exercises, language app tasks, vocabulary revision, exam style questions and more from which they will do class homework tasks, end of unit tests and revision work. We also use a variety of language based websites which have proved to be invaluable for students to learn everything from vocabulary to grammar, tenses and exam revision. All homework is put on to the www.showmyhomework.co.uk website.

Extracurricular Opportunities

GCSE students can attend after school classes on arrangement with their class teacher and all students can access extra help at break and lunchtime. www.memrise.com has become a vital website for individuals to stretch their knowledge of vocabulary as far as they wish.

At Bedale High we have a history of wonderful visits abroad. Amongst these we have organised a trip to the Christmas markets in Düsseldorf and a trip to Paris and Disneyland in France. We know that such visits help increase confidence in speaking and understanding the language and provide an excellent opportunity to put into practice the language learned in the classroom. We will be looking to arrange more trips in the near future.
