Expectations of the PE department regarding kit
Students must always bring their PE kit. A valid note will be required if a student is excused from taking part physically. Students will still be engaged in the learning of the lesson. Support and sanctions are in place when students forget items of kit as required. If students forget their PE kit, they are expected to wear a spare kit provided by school. The correct PE kit must always be brought to every lesson. Any students with long hair are expected to bring a hair bobble to every lesson to tie their hair back. All jewellery must be removed for every lesson. We strongly encourage students to not bring any valuables with them to their PE lessons but if they do to leave them in the valuables trays provided which gets locked away for security.
Why study Physical Education?
Physical Education is an integral part of our school. It is a subject that contributes a great deal to the ethos of the school. The philosophy of the PE department is in harmony with that of the whole school, we aim to promote students and staff alike to partake in a healthy and active lifestyle. At Bedale High School we believe that each child is entitled to full access to participate in physical education regardless of aptitude or ability. It is our intention to develop the whole child – mentally, socially, emotionally, spiritually and physically. We are aware that all children require a programme of physical education to fulfil their developmental needs. The programme is therefore directed to fulfil each child’s needs in a positive learning environment, which promotes enjoyment, and some appreciation of the subject area.
Facts about leading a Healthy and Active Lifestyle
The Physical Education curriculum at Bedale High School is structured in order to give a wide experience of different sporting opportunities. It contains all areas of study as defined by the National Curriculum. The curriculum is broad, balanced and allows development in an array of sporting activities.
In Key Stage 3 the children study Games, Gymnastics, OAA, Athletic Activities and Swimming. In Key Stage 4 the pupils are exposed to a curriculum containing Games, Gymnastics, Dance, Outdoor and Adventurous activities, Athletic Activities and Swimming.
The delivery of the curriculum for year 7 through to Year 11 is from a variety of specialised & non-specialist staff. The teaching styles adopted vary according to the sporting activity and level of ability of the classes and individuals. All learning styles are catered for across the range of activities. The aim of every lesson is to ensure that the children have been active and found some enjoyment from the work covered. They will have gained an insight into the activity being developed and found some understanding of the ‘how’s’ and ‘why’s’ related to the activities taught, together with the use of the four strands of the National Curriculum.
This policy is designed to provide staff, students and parents with a framework regarding formative assessment of students work within GCSE PE.

This policy is for examination PE Courses:
1) Each student must have at least one piece of work (written, practical or presentation) marked each half term
2) In each of the respective PE courses the student’s folders and exercise books should be taken in and monitored once per term i.e. GCSE PE folders should be checked by their GCSE PE teacher every term to ensure that they are up to date and not missing work
3) The checked work should detail i) a positive comment about the work or how well the student is learning and ii) an area of the work or of learning for the student to develop.
The target is related to learning and how to improve the quality of their work and should not be an effort grade i.e. try harder or simply that this work is at “C” level!
4) Any written work will be checked using symbols identified in the ‘marking policy’
5 Each teacher should ensure that every student has the opportunity to use at least one peer-assessment or self-assessment activity during each half term period
6) Students will be made aware of the departmental formative assessment policy at the beginning of the course.
7) When a piece of work has been checked and a target has been created then students should where possible have an opportunity to improve the quality of the work
8) Students will be made aware of the targets they have been set by the teacher writing a comment (WWW and EBI) on their work and teachers should record the target
Examination PE Marking Policy
– Underlined sentence with a tick= correct (good point)
– Circled word with sp= spelling mistake
– Circled sentence with punc= punctuation mistake
– Circled sentence with BOD= Sentence been given the benefit of the doubt
– Circled sentence with TV= Sentence is too vague or doesn’t make sense
– Circled sentence with a ?= not relevant or incorrect statement
– Circled sentence with a rpt= repeated comment
Extension Work and Homework
Students will be expected to complete some written pieces of work including project work. If students are not set a written piece of work the expectation of the PE department is that they complete at least 30 minutes of revision or independent learning.
