Bedale High School achieves a Strong Standard in every area
Following our full Ofsted inspection on 14 July 2026, Bedale High School was judged to have reached a Strong Standard in every area of its provision:
- Achievement – Strong Standard

- Leadership and governance – Strong Standard
- Personal development and wellbeing – Strong Standard
- Safeguarding – Standards met
Under Ofsted’s updated inspection framework, a Strong Standard means that a school is working above the expected standard. We are immensely proud that inspectors recognised the strength of our work across every aspect of school life.
A school transformed
The report reflects the remarkable transformation that has taken place at Bedale High School since our previous inspection.
Inspectors described Bedale as:
“A calm, welcoming and ambitious school.”
They recognised that pupils achieve well, standards are rising quickly and the school’s recent outcomes are much stronger. The report also highlights the considerable impact of the improvements made across the school in a remarkably short period of time.
Ofsted found that pupils feel safe, included and able to succeed. Lessons are settled, movement around the school is purposeful and social times are relaxed. Pupils enjoy their learning, respond positively to teachers’ high expectations and feel that improvements to teaching are helping them learn much more.
The report concludes:
“Pupils thrive because behaviour is calm, expectations are clear and adults model kindness and respect.”
Achievement
Inspectors found that pupils achieve well and that standards are rising quickly. Pupils demonstrate well-developed knowledge, use vocabulary accurately and apply their learning confidently.
Ofsted also recognised that disadvantaged pupils and pupils with special educational needs and/or disabilities produce work of the same high quality as their peers. Gaps are closing quickly, pupils with additional needs are making positive progress and pupils are well prepared for their next steps.
Attendance and Behaviour
Behaviour throughout the school was described as calm, respectful and positive. Pupils value the clarity and consistency of the school’s behaviour system, lessons are settled and bullying is rare.
Inspectors also recognised the rapid and secure improvement in attendance. Persistent absence has reduced significantly, attendance is now in line with national figures and continues to rise, while attendance among pupils with SEND is above national averages.
Curriculum and Teaching
Ofsted found that the school provides a broad and ambitious curriculum that equips pupils with the knowledge they need for their next steps.
Teachers know their subjects well, explain new ideas confidently and check pupils’ understanding carefully. Inspectors highlighted the consistency of teaching and the effective support provided to pupils who need additional help with reading, writing or mathematics.
Inclusion
The report recognises the caring and ambitious culture at Bedale High School, where every pupil is known well and supported to succeed.
Staff identify pupils’ needs quickly and make thoughtful adjustments so that pupils with SEND, disadvantaged pupils and those known to social care can access the same ambitious curriculum as their peers. Pupils told inspectors that they feel valued and included.
Leadership and Governance
Inspectors found that leaders have brought clarity, consistency and ambition to the school. They understand its strengths and priorities, act in pupils’ best interests and have secured significant improvements across every aspect of the school’s provision.
Staff described the school’s systems as well organised and supportive, with manageable workloads and extensive, evidence-informed professional development.
Governance was judged to be effective and purposeful. Governors ask probing strategic questions, fulfil their statutory responsibilities and share a clear, values-led vision for the school.
Personal Development and Wellbeing
Ofsted praised the school’s thoughtful and ambitious personal development programme, which helps pupils become confident, respectful and responsible young people.
The report highlights pupils’ understanding of healthy relationships, online safety, personal wellbeing, ethical issues and British values. Inspectors also recognised the strength of the school’s enrichment programme, including drama, music, the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, rowing, cricket and international trips.
Careers education is well organised, and pupils receive clear guidance and support to prepare for further education, apprenticeships, employment and adult life.
Our next step
The report identifies one area for continued development: strengthening attendance among disadvantaged pupils so that gaps in learning and achievement continue to close rapidly.
This remains an important priority for the school and builds upon the significant improvements in attendance already recognised by inspectors.
A message from the Headteacher
When I joined Bedale High School in September 2024, the school was facing a number of significant challenges. Since then, our students, staff, families and governors have worked together with courage, commitment and compassion to transform the school.
This report belongs to our entire community. It recognises the ambition of our students, the dedication of our staff, the support of our families and the determined leadership of our governors.
We are incredibly proud of what has been achieved, but we will not stand still. We will continue to build on these strong foundations and ensure that every young person at Bedale High School receives an exceptional education and the opportunity to achieve their very best.
